interview with DEATH MAGIC

interview with italian heavy/speed metal band!

1)Can i get a backstory on the band/ band biography?
The band was born in Turin (Italy) in January 2012, by the idea of Mattia Scifo (singer and guitarist) to form a band inspired by the great Heavy Metal classics, with a speed approach to the genre.
Found the members for the first line-up, Mattia began to arrange the first songs with Daniele Ilardi on drums, who later will record the drum session of the debut Ep “Too Hot to Roll”.
The line-up changed many times and the band found difficulty to reach stability and to find members devoted to the cause.
During November 2012, Alessandro Pira joins Death Magic as guitar player and the mechanism begins to engage in the right way. In the same period the band find even a bass player (Andrea “RockHead”), so that the line-up was for the first time complete!
So, during February 2013, the band starts recording in studio the drums for the debut Ep, but unfortunately after few days, Death Magic’s line-up is again incomplete…for inner problems of the band, Daniele and Andrea leave Death Magic.
Mattia and Alessandro don’t give up and after a month Lorenzo Boano and Tony Cipudda (Alessio Matricardi) join the band  respectively as bass and drums players.
This is the definitively line-up from March 2013.

Our Debut Ep “Too Hot to Roll” came out right these days, so the story continues…

2)What lyrical theme do you guys use in your music? What message do you want to send?
We play Heavy Metal, so sometimes we use some cliché, some recurring themes connected to Heavy Metal imaginary; our lyrics talk about trouble and difficulties we find in our everyday lives, always treated in a metaphorically way, about women, about, music,  about Satan (as the Evil, chaos, first Running Wild style), about fights and all those things we can talk about through that Heavy Metal imaginary we all love and spread!

3) What bands have influenced your band and its sound?
We have several influences, all the Heavy Metal monsters! At the beginning our sound and our kind of composition was mainly influenced by first Running Wild (It's too clear we don’t like them ahahah!), Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Saxon, Def Leppard, Accept, Mercyful Fate and many more. This is a list of exclusively European bands, but even bands from USA or other countries are of inspiration to us! We also use blues or hard rock patterns in our songs, the only important thing is that it sounds fucking Heavy Metal!

4)What made you guys decide to form a band?
All starts from the passion for music (we all had different musical experiences before Death Magic) and for all the things concerning it.
For all of us, Heavy Metal is NOT only music, but even a point of view, a way to see the world, a lifestyle. We want, throughout our songs, to make you feel our passion and to share it with all those who have the same passion as we have.

5)How do you guys feel about the classifications in metal? like deathcore, metalcore and other subgenres and how some get a negative rep.
This is a hot topic, there are many points of view about it. We want to underline just a thing. As you say, there are many classification in metal. We play Heavy Metal. You can call it Traditional, Classic, Speed, Power, US, True, 80’s, “Clean-up-your-fuckin’-room-or-i-will-not-give-you-the-money-for-wine” METAL…It’s not so important! Those are only terms to define a different approach to play Heavy Metal or completely invented ones. Only music is important! Regarding DeathCore, MetalCore and other subgenres we simply say: this IS NOT Heavy Metal, as written before… Heavy Metal has certain characteristics for the sound and for the imaginary. If a band plays a music that has nothing to do with these characteristics, it doesn't mean it sucks, just IS NOT Heavy Metal. It’s easy!
It's not only a distorted guitar or pounding drums that make your band a Heavy Metal band!

6) When not doing things with the band, what can you guys be seen doing?
We all have different interests out of the band:
When Mattia doesn't play with the band, he likes going for a ride with his mountain bike and doing other things relared to fitness. He's also a fan of horror cinema. He's studying Psychology: be careful, he's watching you...
Lorenzo during the night likes playing arm wrestling in the worst establishments with ill repute in the city. He's studying electronic engineering and, of course, has a "heavy" passion for everything related to sound engineering.
Alessio works in a telecommunications company as a technician..In his free time he enjoys watching horror movies, listening and collecting CDs and has an incredible passion for onions!!
Alessandro would like to break rocks for job…he is studing geology at Turin University. In the free time he volunteer in a doghouse, as maintenance, since he loves animals.
Of course, we all have an immense love for beer and wine and a lot of our spare time is spent in this discipline...

7) Your biggest band moment?
Probably our greatest moment is our present. We have been working hard for months and now our Debut Ep is finally out! We’ll play in several live shows before the end of this year, so we’ll show what we can do (hope for the best…) and we can spread our music on stage! Meanwhile we’re having a lot of fun with our friends!
We did not expect it, but a lot of people are supporting us! Thanks You All! Hope not to disappoint you!

8) What is your opinion on the current state of metal?
This is another hot topic! We could stay here “days, weeks, months, many years” (Self-quotation…sorry! Ahahahah!) talking about this.
The past years and those that we’re living now, have a lot of positive things, but even negative ones. As you all know, we have been living a sort of revival of Heavy Metal for some years now: a lot of new bands and the return of “old” bands.
This was the opportunity for all of us, who didn’t live the “Golden Years”, to live again some feelings known only through an LP, or a CD, or even a movie. And this was an opportunity even for the “Olds” to regain their passion and experience and share it with the younger metalheads! Unfortunately, many times things go wrong. Maybe we’re talking only about the Italian situation, but there are too many inner fights, a lack of humility and a lack of  coherence. Maybe Heavy Metal is just a game for someone, but don’t worry there are a lot of motivated people defending the line!

9) How did you guys come up with your band name?
The first time we thought about a moniker for the band, it was when we had a complete line-up for the first time.
We wanted to use an unheard name in Heavy Metal scene, and we thought about something regarding spells, occult; something that could give well the atmosphere of magic and darkness, resounding in the minds of the people keeping in touch with us.

10) What can the fans expect to see from you in the future?
We don't know, it's a mystery to us. But we believe in ourselves and in this band. Soon we will have our first live shows and we'll see what we can really do.
A little anticipation, we are working on new incredible stuff! Thanks to all of you supporting Heavy Metal! Check us on Facebook and Hope to see you at our gigs. Drink a beer sometimes! Ciao!
